The purpose of the museum is to tell the story of African Americans in all their permutations: family life, Civil Rights movement, arts and entertainment, inventions, sports, medicine, architecture, politics, religion, law, technology, etc.. Our mission statement: “Dedicated to preserve, maintain and educate the public on the history of African-American ancestors in the State of Louisiana and Tangipahoa parish in collaboration with other entities of cultural interest throughout the United States of America and abroad through artistic endeavors”. The Collinswood School Museum, originally built around 1874, contains theme display cases with items depicting the city's history surrounding the railroad, agriculture, Indians, and the cypress mill.

The Independence Italian Festival Cultural Museum, located in the Old Catholic Church, displays the Italian lifestyles in Independence area. Independence Italians were and are to this day very family and church oriented as is depicted among the museum memorabilia and artifacts. Open by appointment.

Camp Moore Confederate Museum includes numerous artifacts, documents and displays that help explain the Civil War and the importance of Camp Moore and the soldier's life during that time. In the Camp Moore Cemetery, a Southern soldier holding his long rifle, stands atop a Confederate monument as if standing watch over the graves.

The old Venable Building is the home for the Kentwood Museum. Timber, brick and dairy industries have been the building blocks for Kentwood. Displays depict the lifestyles, culture and industry in the Kentwood area from the 1800's. The history of the famous Kentwood Spring Water from the deep flowing artesian well is on display at the museum as well as an exhibit of memorabilia from Kentwood's own Britney Spears, international singing star and actress. On display are some of Britney's childhood treasures and bedroom set, as well as awards received up to the present time. Open Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. Last tour scheduled at 3:00 pm.

Sweet Home Baptist Church depicts the rich history and lives of the African Americans of the Kentwood Community beginning in 1888. The church holds many artifacts and memorabilia from the past to the present. Special services and gospel singings are still held in the church on special occasions. Open by appointment.
